THE UNKNOWN GOD
We may know some public figures, their personal likes, dislikes, and other details but still do not really know them. How well do you know God? You must have heard so much about Him, likely have studied His book, the Bible, but do not actually know Him. “For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, To The Unknown God. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.” From here Paul was saying “People of Athens, I see that you are very religious. As I was going through your city and looking at the things you worship, I found an altar with the words, “To an Unknown God.”
Historically, the Athenians were a very religious people, given to the worship of many gods. However, the true God was unknown to them. They were zealous but ignorant of the true God. The human heart cannot by vain reasoning discover God. God can only be known by revelation through His Spirit. This was why Paul was concerned and passionate
to make the true God known to the Athenians.
It is disheartening today that men still serve the God they do not know. That is why the priority of Jesus Christ was to make the true God known. He prayed to His heavenly Father towards the end of His ministry on earth “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” John 17:3. This is not playing religion, or a vain aura of piety. Knowing God is accepting Christ as Savior, and only then can we find eternal life.
Stop that devotion to the unknown God! If you still engage in prayer and fasting without freedom from sin that is vain religion. No matter how excited you are when it comes to the things of God, if your spirit has not been penetrated by the light and grace of Jesus Christ, you are serving a God you do not know. Coming into personal relationship with Jesus and living a life of freedom from sin is what brings an end to the worship of the unknown God.
