CITY WITHOUT KING (Part one)
During the civil war Abraham Lincoln met with a group of ministers for a prayer breakfast. One of the ministers said, “Mr. President, let us pray that God is on our side”. Lincoln’s response showed far greater insight, “No, gentlemen, let us pray that we are on God’s side.” Like America, never at any time did the Nation of Israel abandon God like the time of the Judges. They were at many times not on the side of God. This became a major highlight of the Book of Judges as the book describes the state of backsliding and moral corruption of the Nation of Israel.
In the same book of Judges where their moral decadence was x-rayed we also found the root cause of the Nation’s constant departure from God, and here is it “In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” Judges 17:6. What a damnable state! To be without a king, without a supreme magistrate. Even after the death of Joshua God gave them Judges “And yet they would not hearken unto their judges” Judges 2:17. From the time of the death of Joshua
down to the time of Samuel which was a period of about 400 years, Israel lingered in this state of utter darkness. You can imagine what this entails. There was none to restrain them, or punish them when they erred; and this accounts for the many evil things done during this period. “…when the judge was dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers,…” Judges 2:19. May we not be without king!
The perfect description of the state of our campus and this generation at large is that of a city without king. In a city without king what you have is anarchy and everyone does that which is good in his eyes. Young people practice today what they should not be talking about in about five to ten years’ time and no one is challenging them. You can be sure, if God did not spare the people in the time of the Judges this generation will not be spared of her own evil ways, except we repent.
