THE BEST RESOLUTION
The usual practice for many in the New Year is making of resolutions. A New Year resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western World but also found in the Eastern World, in which a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behavior, accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their life at the start of a new year. Based on research, the most popular New Year resolutions are about self-improvement (living healthier 23%, getting happy 21%, losing weight 20%, exercising 7%, stop smoking 5%, reduce drinking 2%).
Based on the experiences of many, resolutions are easy to make but hard to keep. That is why people who make resolutions fall far short of their self-expectations. In a particular year, report showed that 35% of participants who failed their New Year Resolution admitted they had unrealistic goals, 33% of them did not keep track of their progress, 23% forgot about their resolutions; and about one in 10
respondents claimed they made too many resolutions.
A resolution could be powerful if it turns away someone from doing evil, and brings about a lasting change of life, and a transformation of character. It is powerful if it is a sober call to reflect on one’s behavior and how one can continue to make efforts in the right direction. That is the resolution I challenge you to make in this New Year.
Above all, if all your resolutions over the years have been those that had no eternal consequence on your soul, if they centered only on how to lose weight, do more exercises and live a more healthy life; then you are playing a dangerous game with your soul. As a wise person, you need to make the best resolution this New Year. That best resolution is to consider the eternal value of your never-dying soul and make a wise decision for Christ. “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” Mark 8:36-37.
